Where the Money Goes
THE FACES OF OUR COMMUNITY… OUR CURES
Meet Janet. Janet and her husband were successful co-owners of a Re/Max agency in Harleysville, PA.., until the economy delivered a blow to the housing market. Forced to give up medical benefits to keep the agency afloat, the timing couldn’t have be worse, for Janet to hear the words “You have breast cancer.” The Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure enabled Janet to get treatment at Drexel University College of medicine… this Race saved her life.
Meet Avis, a determined woman who worked hard all of her life to raise 3 children. In February, Avis was old enough to retire but worked part time to make ends meet for herself; she very much looked forward to “spoiling” her 7 grandchildren and enjoying life. Until, she found a lump… a sure sign of trouble, but no insurance and no means to pay. The Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure enabled Avis to get treatment at Einstein Healthcare Network … this Race saved her life.
Meet Susan. Your average south Jersey mom, life was going along wonderfully for Sue until she was ‘downsized’ at the office. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer… she had a diagnosis and no means to treat it. She needed help, she needed hope. This Race for the Cure delivered both, in the form of a community grant at Virtua, where Sue is currently in treatment and on her way ‘back to life’. This Race made Sue a survivor.
Meet Ariana. She’s ten. She never met her grandmother before she died of breast cancer. But, she takes seriously her responsibility to make sure no child her age will lose a parent or grandparent to breast cancer “ever again!” She knows, the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure is THE means to that end, so she’ll be Dashing to Make a Difference on May 13.
These women epitomize “Our Race. Our Community. Our Cures”. For 22 years, the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure has united our community in the fight for Janet, Avis, Susan, Ariana… and for thousands like them living right here in Philadelphia and the 14 surrounding counties.
For, you see, the 40,000+ people who register every year, and the 100,000 who come out to the event on Mother’s Day for empowerment and celebration, know two things.
1) The Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure empowers great things, and so far has:
• Funded over 120,000 mammograms for women in need in our community
• Distributed over $49 million in grants for local breast cancer programs
• Contributed $19 million for research
2) There is still much more work to be done, more women to reach, more lives to save.
And, the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate promise you we’ll keep on uniting, fighting and winning until no life is ever again threatened by breast cancer.
